05.2024 Double Brood Spring

A month of celebration--graduations, Songkran, cicadas--and sleep deprivation. The sun is hot but the breeze is cool. I hope as the soporific heat arrives things will slow down and I can take a breath.

This month’s playlist:

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Furiosa seems to have the same issue that Prometheus did: everyone expecting another Alien/Fury Road and confusing their disappointment of expectations not being met with an inferior experience.

Alien is Horror. Fury Road is Action (emphasis on the capital A). Prometheus wasn't interested in doing Alien again. Instead, it delved into philosophical speculative fiction--ruminating on the relationship between creator and creation. Furiosa is a Greek tragedy. An epic odyssey of mythic proportions. The pace is slower; the conflicts grander. Chapters. Narration.

So I reject the discourse of whether Furiosa is better/worse than Fury Road. These are apples and oranges. They are two chapters that complement each other. Frankly, Furiosa has subsumed Fury Road as its spectacular final act. Next time I watch Fury Road, I'm going to be obliterated in an entirely new way when Furiosa learns The Green Place is gone. And that's thanks to this differently-paced prequel.

Furiosa may be the greatest prequel ever made.

King of the Hill

My latest “cooking show.” I’ll be laughing one moment and nearly tearing up the next. That’s great writing with strong characters, I’ll tell you hwat!

Animal Well

This game is the discovery simulator I’ve been craving. The consistent moments of revelation amidst its mystery are extremely satisfying. And the platforming is the perfect level of challenge for me. Clever, dense, and the right length.

This month I also wrote a flash fiction piece but I'm still looking for a photo to accompany it. And I read this insane/fascinating thread concerning aliens, demons, and DMT.
